Novel statistical method development for discovery and interpretation of genetic contribution to human complex traits
  Dr V Iotchkova
Application Deadline: 24 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Genetic and epidemiological research has generated a vast amount of data and expertise for evaluating the genetic contribution to human traits in health and disease.
Modelling stem cell fate and alterations due to mutations
  Dr E Morrissey
Application Deadline: 24 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The group uses a combination of deep learning, stochastic models and Bayesian modelling to study questions relating to stem cell fate dynamics and how mutations in stem cells alter their normal behaviour, become fixed and accumulate in the tissue eventually leading to cancer.

High-throughput discovery of novel antibiotics using synthetic microbiology
  Dr R Draheim
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a frequent problem in the treatment of disease caused by several clinical bacterial pathogens. In the European Union, antibiotic-resistant infections kill nearly 25,000 patients and represent a total expenditure of £1.5 billion per year.
Sudden Coronary Artery Dissection Modelling for Medial Image detection and classification markers
  Dr S Beier
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Sudden Coronary Artery Dissection or SACD often causes sudden death in young females below 44 years. This non-atherosclerotic condition is caused through the split of the internal arterial wall, which narrows the effective arterial cross-section and prevents sufficient blood supply causing heart attacks.
  Unbiased Estimation for Inverse Problems
  Dr A Jasra
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project concerns the development of Markov chain Monte Carlo and sequential Monte Carlo methods for unbiased estimation in Bayesian inverse problems.
4-year PhD studentships in Behaviour Informatics and the multimodal study of behaviour

Funding Type

PhD Type

Newcastle University is offering five, 4-year PhD studentships in the field of behaviour informatics.
The use of biomarkers Defensins 2 and 3 for screening of oral cancer in high-risk populations
  Dr A Tappuni, Dr F Flores-Borja
Application Deadline: 7 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

We are seeking applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship to commence in October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, in oral cancer.
FoodBioSystems DTP - Assessing food-borne risks of Toxocara infection in support of public health and food quality assurance
Dr M Betson, Prof E Morgan
Application Deadline: 6 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Research Group. FOODBIOSYSTEMS BBSRC DTP. The neglected parasitic disease toxocariasis, caused by infection with the roundworm Toxocara, is an increasing public health concern.
