Fully funded PhD positions in Chemistry at King’s College London

KCL Chemistry PhD studentships

The Department of Chemistry at King’s College London is inviting applications for 8 fully-funded PhD studentships in the 2017-18 academic year. This is an exciting opportunity for talented students to join a new and rapidly expanding Chemistry department in a world-leading university. A focus of the department is to realise the transformative power of Chemistry at the interface with Biology and Medicine. We aim to advance functional biology by moving from a descriptive picture of Life Sciences to a quantitative understanding using chemical principles. We aspire to fabricate entirely new materials with creative fusions of Chemistry and Biology.

The studentships will be funded for 4 years, on a starting bursary at the standard research council rate (currently £16,553 per annum) and tuition fees at the Home/EU rate.

Studentships on offer include Graduate Teaching Studentships (GTS). These enable graduates with excellent honours degrees to undertake a four year training programme that integrates a research project with teaching experience plus training in research methods and transferable key skills. The student will spend approximately 75% of their time on cutting edge research and 25% on education - an average of six hours per week of teaching and training activities.

Sample projects are available on our website and include:

  • Title: Inhibiting cell division
    Supervisor: Professor Ulrike Eggert
  • Title: Unnatural Amino Acids : Synthesis and Application towards Foldamer Design
    Supervisor: Dr Andre Cobb
  • Title: Novel electrolytes and electrochemical processes for waste heat harvesting
    Supervisor: Dr Leigh Aldous
  • Title: Structural analysis of a novel cytolytic fungal peptide toxin by mass spectrometry
    Supervisor: Dr Antoni Borysik
  • Title: High-performance glycoengineering of IgE antibodies
    Supervisor: Dr Gerd Wagner
  • 3 positions under the supervision of Professor Mark Wallace

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact individual supervisors for further discussion of individual projects.

Applicants should hold, or expect to gain, a first or upper second class degree in chemistry or a relevant related subject, and be exceptionally motivated for research.

Applications need to be submitted via the King’s College London online application portal.

For further information about the application process, please contact the postgraduate admissions tutor: gerd.wagner@kcl.ac.uk

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The deadline for all projects is 28 February. Offers may be made to exceptional candidates before the deadline and late applications may be considered if the post has not been filled.
