Fully Funded BHF 4 Year PhD Programme in Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes

Our programme

Soon, 1 in 10 UK adults will have diabetes. In spite of modern treatments, most of these people will suffer major cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke, impairing their quality of life and survival. Our BHF 4-year PhD programme uses our expertise to develop future scientists who can meet this challenge and currently hosts 16 post-graduate researchers. Applications are now invited for 5 new studentships, commencing October 2024.

Eligibility

Applicants must be eligible under the UK Home Fee status criteria with, or expecting to obtain, at least an upper 2nd class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area, which might include: medical sciences, biomedical sciences, structural biology, biochemistry, imaging, physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and computing. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates and particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups. All scholarships will be awarded on the basis of candidate potential. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the Faculty’s English Language requirements, where applicable.

Funding

This studentship will cover the cost of academic fees (at the UK Home Fee rate for postgraduate researchers) and a standard BHF PhD stipend (£19,919 - £23, 298 per year), based on 2023/24 rates. The studentship also includes a budget for research consumables and funding of up to £3,000 to attend relevant scientific meetings.
