Chemical and mechanical guidance in collective cell migration (S3.5-MPS-Ucar)

A fully funded PhD opportunity to participate in the world-leading research undertaken by the EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award at the University of Sheffield. Read more
Supervisors: Dr Mehmet Can Ucar, Dr K Campbell
13 January 2027  PhD Research Project  Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

Different but moving together: Mechanisms of heterogenous collective cell migration

Collective cell migration is fundamental to embryonic development, tissue repair and cancer invasion. Much of what we know about this process comes from studying relatively uniform groups of cells. Read more

The sub-lethal impact of pesticides on foraging in bumblebees - linking landscape-scale behaviour change to molecular and physiological responses to understand the mechanism & mitigate its effects

The focus of the PhD is to understand the effects of pesticides on bees from a physiological perspective (differential gene-expression, metabolomics) and connecting this to behavioural changes in the field, by using a new landscape-scale tracking system, that allows us to track the bee as it forages, and record behaviour using an accelerometer. The genetic and developmental control of complex nanostructure formation in butterfly wing scales

Butterfly wings are natural wonders, covered in colourful scales that are used for signalling, thermoregulation and to help with aerodynamic performance. Read more

Unravelling the role of SOX10-regulated paraspeckles in the enteric nervous system development and disease

The enteric nervous system (ENS), the vast network of neurons and glia controlling gut function, is generated in utero by embryonic neural crest (NC) cells that colonise the gastrointestinal tract. Read more
