The University of Birmingham offers its own Students Union through The Guild of Students, including over 300 active student groups and societies. Covering your interests and activities, they cater for our entire student community. The Postgraduate and Mature Students Association (PGMSA) is a student-led group that champions the needs of postgraduates and mature students. The PGMSA aims to help empower postgraduates to make friends through common interests and values.

To help you adjust to life as a postgraduate, the Guild also offers free, impartial advice for all students. There’s welfare support available online or on campus, including bespoke services for international students. Our Global Buddies scheme creates new connections while providing guidance across your personal and professional development.

You can earn while you learn here at the university, helping you manage your finances while you study and gain work experience relevant to you. We have part-time vacancies across the university itself, city-centre and the local community. To help you develop your skills and confidence, you can sign up to a variety of workshops with the Guild and Careers Network. From volunteering opportunities to paid work on campus, it’s easy to make new friends and connect with the second city.
