EPSRC Funded PhD Studentships in Interdisciplinary Physical, Computational, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences

EPSRC Funded PhD Studentships in Interdisciplinary Physical, Computational, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences

The University of Dundee is offering up to 10 funded 3.5 year PhD studentships in a range of exciting interdisciplinary research projects. These are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and cover a huge range of the innovative research that is carried out in Dundee: projects can be found in traditional physical, mathematical, computer and engineering science, but also in areas such as art and design, forensic science, biological science and medical science. The interdisciplinary aspect of much of our work means that students work on highly challenging problems and have significant opportunity to develop new and valuable skills.

Of the advertised EPSRC Funded PhD Studentships we expect up to 10 to be filled.

Evaluation and Criteria Guidance

  • Candidates should have a 2:1 or above honours degree, or an appropriate MSc, in a subject relevant to the project under consideration
  • In stage 1 applications will be assessed on the quality of the candidates, which will encapsulate academic ability, candidate motivation, writing skills, quality of references and experience. These will be assessed via the paper application.
  • A further evaluation stage will be carried out for applicants who pass stage 1, which will incorporate an interview/visit to Dundee.

Funding and Eligibility

Funding is provided by EPSRC, and applicants must meet the EPSRC student eligibility:

www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/eligibility/

Typically this means that students should be from the UK (or have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship). Additionally students should have at least a 2:1 degree, or 2:2 degree with an appropriate Master’s degree. Students from the EU outside of the UK are eligible for fees only studentships and would be expected to cover the living allowance from an alternative source.

The studentships are 3.5 years in duration and consist of an annual living allowance and course fees. The allowance is set by the Research Councils UK and is currently £14,296 (tax free) per year.

Students who do not meet the EPSRC eligibility requirements may still apply, but would be expected to have an alternative method of funding.
