About the Project

Infectious diseases are one of the biggest challenges to human health, a problem that has been exacerbated in recent years with the appearance of bacterial strains that have developed resistance to most common antibiotics. Early detection of microbial infection has become an important focus of research in order to provide early and efficient treatment. Traditional microbiological methods for detecting and identifying pathogens are laborious and require skilled personnel, presenting a barrier to rapid point of use. Additionally, bacterial niches are complex environments where many bacterial species coexist.
In this project we will investigate the synthesis and application of novel affordable sensors to the detection of microbial pathogens. These materials will be able to deliver simple, accurate and reliable diagnosis of relevant human pathogens. This project is highly multidisciplinary and involves a collaboration between the University of Birmingham (Dr F. Fernandez-Trillo and Dr P. Rodriguez) and the University of Warwick (Dr M. I. Gibson)
