About the Project
Recent market studies foresee VR will become mainstream, reaching a $7 billion market from 2018 and $62 billion by 2025. However, users are still forced to carry a head-mounted display, becoming unaware of people around them (e.g. colleagues), and encumbering use of other technologies or instruments. As a result, VR in its current format will hardly blend into our daily lives in the same seamless manner as a smartphone or a wearable device does.
Other 3D solutions allow users to still be aware of the world around them, but they add other limitations. For instance, glasses-free 3D displays only allow direct hand interaction in close proximity to the display. Bandwidth requirements limit holographic technologies to small sizes, limited resolution or non real-time behaviour.
In practice, either technologies only allow limited access to the benefits of 3D interaction (e.g. no direct manipulation, fixed positions and form factors) or they require aids (e.g. glasses, gloves) that make it cumbersome to interact with the world around us (e.g. typing, using a smartphone, watching a LCD screen).
The main goal of this PhD will be to develop novel 3D formats that allow users to directly see and interact with 3D content, while still being able to interact with the space (i.e. people, tools) around them. This includes autostereoscopic mobile solutions, but also their combination with situated 3D displays such as augmented tabletops or fog screens. Some examples of such solutions can be found at http://diegomartinezplasencia.es.
A mixed background covering both 3D rendering (e.g. OpenGL, OGRE, C++) and electrical engineering (e.g. Arduino, circuit design, laser cutters, 3D printers) will be required. Thus we welcome applicants with a backgrounds in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related fields that can demonstrate expertise in either (or both) of them.

£14,296 tax free stipend plus a fee waiver to the UK/EU amount for 3.5 years.
Due to funding restrictions, the studentship is open to UK and EU resident students only. EU students may not be eligible for the full award. Students from EU countries other than the UK are generally eligible for a fees-only award. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK.
