Operads for locally covariant quantum field theory

Project Description

The aim of this project is to explore a particularly important facet of quantum field theory on Lorentzian manifolds, its underlying abstract algebra, by using techniques from operad theory. As the name might suggest, operads are all about abstract algebraic operations and they are very useful to unravel and capture the core properties of quantum field theories. This modern point of view will allow us to gain deep insights into what the essential properties of quantum field theories are and it also points towards completely novel ways to construct examples. Finally, the interplay between operads and homotopy theory will be used to deduce the algebraic structures underlying quantum gauge theories.

This studentship will be funded by the Royal Society via the 1st Year URF and DHF Research Grant “Operads for locally covariant quantum field theory”. It is associated to the Royal Society University Research Fellowship “Homotopical algebra and quantum gauge theories” by Dr Alexander Schenkel.

Summary: UK/EU students - Tuition Fees paid, and full Stipend at the RCUK rate, which is £14,296 per annum for 2016/17. There will also be some support available for you to claim for limited conference attendance. The scholarship length will be 4 years.

Funding Notes

Eligibility/Entry Requirements: We require an enthusiastic graduate with a 1st class degree in Mathematics (or Mathematical Physics), preferably at MMath level, or an equivalent overseas degree. Preference will be given to those candidates who already have some experience in a relevant area of pure mathematics, e.g. algebraic topology, category theory or homological algebra.
