About the Project

Start date: October 2018

Project code: MPHY4401018

We are looking for talented and ambitious graduates who wish to pursue a PhD in Quantum Optics and Quantum Metrology. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Vincenzo Tamma at the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Portsmouth and Dr Frank Narducci at the Physics Department of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, USA.

Project
This project is part of a larger research programme aimed at developing entirely novel versatile platforms for quantum sensing and quantum computing based on multiboson interferometry with strong impact in security, communication, and imaging.

Multiboson quantum interference with photons or atoms is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum physics, and is at the very heart of quantum information and sensing technologies. However, the post-classical sensing capabilities of multiboson networks are yet very far from being fully explored in practical experimental scenarios.

In particular, through an interdisciplinary effort at the interface between quantum optics, quantum metrology and quantum foundations, this project aims to theoretically develop novel scalable multiboson interferometric and measurement techniques with realistic photonic and atomic sources for applications in quantum technologies for high-precision sensing and imaging for the benefit of the whole society.

The anticipated results of this project will be essential in the development of multiboson interferometers that could outperform the current schemes based on first order interference for precision inertial navigation, Navy Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) applications as well as high-precision sensing immune to environmental noise. Moreover, the ability to probe a large number of spatial parameters based on high-order correlation measurements will enable the implementation of sensors for position identification and spatial characterization of multiple complex objects in noisy environments.

The successful candidate will be part of the quantum optics and quantum information group at Portsmouth led by Dr. Vincenzo Tamma and also benefit from an international research environment by interacting with the group of Dr. Frank Narducci at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where the experimental realization of the theoretical results foreseen in the project will be carried out. Support and development opportunities through the South-East Physics network (SEPnet) are also available.

Candidate specification
We welcome applications from candidates with a Master’s degree in Physics and a strong interest in quantum optics and quantum metrology. If English is not your first language, please provide evidence of IELTS (score of 6.5, with no component falling below 6.0).

Enquiries and application
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Vincenzo Tamma at [Email Address Removed] (+442392 842452).

You can apply online by submitting your CV, two references and copies of any relevant qualifications. Please quote the project code - MPHY4401018 when prompted.
