Project Description:
This unique opportunity builds upon the research expertise on intergenerational care and implementation within Bangor University. The Scholarship would be especially attractive for graduates in the fields of Psychology, Sociology or Health who wish to pursue a 12-month postgraduate research degree.
There is growing interest in the benefits for both children and older adults in taking part in opportunities for shared meaningful activities following the recent success of the series created in Bangor University (Hen Blant Bach- S4C / Toddlers take on Dementia-BBC Wales). There is a long tradition of primary school children joining adults to take part in activities but they tend to be sporadic and there is a lack of research on the sustainability of such programmes within communities. This research will be in partnership with Gwynedd council and the successful applicant will work alongside the ‘Bridging the Generations’ officer to evaluate opportunities for children in Primary schools to develop a programme of activities with older adults in their local care homes and extra supported housing in Gwynedd.
The research will involve three phases as part of the Masters by Research supported by the supervisory team. The first phase involves a mapping exercise of the current level of intergenerational programmes within the region to gain a better understanding of the current level of activity and baseline of activity. The empirical study will adopt a mixed method to evaluate the implementation and impact of introducing a weekly programme for older adults and children within five new sites identified in partnership with the company partner. Information gathered as part of the research will inform a best practice document for Local authorities.
The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring ethical permission for the study and gathering research data in the local authority. The data collection will involve interviewing participants and key stakeholders and conducting non-participant observations within intergenerational sessions. The research will build knowledge on the sustainability of such interventions and any potential barriers in bringing both generations together from a personal and service delivery perspective with long term follow up on selected sites.
Successful candidates will need to be able to demonstrate excellent communication in English and Welsh as they will be interviewing children and adults that will have Welsh as a first language. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills with experience in successfully managing projects and preparing written reports to a high standard. The expertise within both the academic and company supervisors will ensure that the successful applicant will receive excellent support and guidance within a dynamic and experienced team.
