We have a new opening to join our data science research team, investigating links between online activity on platforms such as Google, Wikipedia, Twitter and Flickr, and human behaviour in the real world.

The studentship is open to Home/EU and international/Overseas students for 4 years from October 2016 and includes:

1) Tuition Fees at Home/EU rate
Please note that International/Overseas students will be required to find funding to cover the difference between Home/EU fees.

2) A stipend of circa £14,000 pa for 4 years

About the project:

We are seeking to recruit a creative and highly motivated prospective PhD student who is fascinated by the relationship between information flow on the Internet and real world behaviour, to work with Tobias Preis and Suzy Moat.

Our work so far has investigated how data from Google, Wikipedia, Flickr and Twitter can be used to measure and predict economic behaviour, criminal activity and reactions to disasters. Applicants should have strong programming skills and exciting ideas to join us in developing this research stream, as well as a minimum 2.1 class undergraduate degree in a relevant quantitative discipline and ideally a relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent research experience in a work setting).

You will also have very strong interests in finding behavioural patterns in large sets of data. You will have a range of technical skills to support you in this endeavour, and will be able to demonstrate these skills through success in related past projects. Ideally, you will also have some experience with either statistics or machine learning.

Data Science is a highly interdisciplinary area. We are very happy to accept applications from students with a background in any discipline who can demonstrate solid quantitative skills and a strong interest in using these abilities to investigate human behaviour. The current team has an interdisciplinary background in both the social sciences and quantitative disciplines such as Computer Science, Physics and Mathematics.
