Dr A I Osofero  Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

The application of stayed strut in earthquake prone regions is limited and greatly inhibited by the lack of understanding of its behaviour under dynamic loading. Static behaviour of cable stayed struts has experienced increased attention in recent time. However, its dynamic behaviour is still not well understood. In this project, experimental investigations of the behaviour of stayed struts will be carried out. Extensive numerical and analytical models will also be developed. This will include parametric studies and optimisation of the key design parameters, e.g. stay initial prestress, system geometry and imperfection amplitude. This work is intended to culminate into the development of design guidance for this type of structure under dynamic loading.

Essential Background: Equivalent of 2.1 Honours Degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering.

Knowledge of: Finite element modelling, Experimental investigation.
