China’s emergence as a world leader in research and higher education has been well-documented in recent years, with generous funding allocated to universities from the central government.
The presence of several Chinese universities among the very best in the world according to the league tables on this page reflects this progress and China’s ambitious investment in higher education. It’s no surprise that PhD students from across the globe are increasingly drawn to the research opportunities on offer at universities in China.

So, how good are universities in China for PhD study?
