What did you get out of doing a PhD?

There's multiple aspects of doing a PhD. Professionally, what I got out of it was learning how to be a scientist. My mentor is a phenomenal scientist, so I had really fantastic training and it really allowed me to develop the skills necessary to become an independent scientist. At a personal level, of course, I've made lots of fantastic friends and a network that I still keep to this day.

What was the biggest challenge during your PhD?

I think there are lots of challenges during your PhD training, but probably the biggest challenge is to learn to accept failure. Science is a very cruel mistress at times and sometimes things don't work. And so learning to learn from your failures and really make something out of it is a challenge, but it's very rewarding challenge.

Why should people do a PhD?

I think people should do a PhD, particularly a science PhD, if they're interested in really learning how to function as a researcher, to understand the scientific method and to learn how to do top quality science.

What’s your top PhD tip?

Supervisor management - learn it!
