CRUK Black Leaders in Cancer

For the past 2 years, we have participated in CRUK’s Black Leaders in Cancer programme. Funded by CRUK and run in collaboration with the Windsor Fellowship and Black in Cancer, the programme aims to help develop the next generation of Black leaders in cancer research.

This scheme is aimed at students from Black heritage backgrounds pursuing a DPhil in a cancer-related field and is open to people who self-identify as being from a Black heritage background, including a mixed background, for example: Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed background (to include Black African, Black Caribbean or other Black backgrounds).

Students will have access to opportunities across their host department and division, as well as from the DPhil in Cancer Science Programme. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the cohort’s diversity across clinical, biological, engineering, mathematics and statistics backgrounds enables students to form connections outside of their local lab environments.

During the first year, students attend a series of seminars and workshops, which are both an education initiative and an opportunity to develop support networks. An example of topics covered includes:

Advanced seminar series: Fundamental Cancer Biology, Early Cancer Detection, Immuno-Oncology, Cancer Big Data, Clinical Cancer Science, Onco-Innovation and an annual student symposium.

Workshops: Patient and Public Involvement, Immuno-Oncology, Cancer Big Data, Early Detection, Collaborative project competition Students also join our mentoring scheme, which focuses on individual career trajectory and achieving personal and professional growth.

You can visit our student profile pages to see what research our current students are undertaking.
