About the Project

The use of 3D environments and virtual reality technology in serious contexts is expanding rapidly as stable platforms (e.g. Oculus Rift, HTC Vive) become widely available. The 3DVisLab is engaged with a number of projects that apply these tools and technologies in non-entertainment contexts. For example visualisation of historic shipwrecks from subsea data, glaciers from aerial photogrammetry and the reconstruction of important heritage sites.

This project will engage with the aesthetic and technical challenges relating to the capture and representation of inaccessible, remote and often hazardous environments in a VR context. It will focus on developing effective methodologies for creating aesthetically considered immersive experiences that support the ambitions and requirements of a wide range of applications. Project proposals will focus on the following questions: How can immersive VR experiences convey real-world sites in a meaningful way? How can missing data and uncertainty be represented? What are appropriate strategies for effective user experience design in VR?

The successful candidate will have a strong working knowledge of 3D software (modelling, animation, lighting, visual effects) and real time environments (e.g. Unity, Unreal Engine). Experience of game design and virtual reality projects would be extremely useful.

This project is in collaboration with the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science.
