Sir Aziz Sheikh is a Professor of Primary Care Research and Development at The University of Edinburgh and serves as the Dean of Data. He is the Director of the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research and a Research Director of Health Data Research UK, as well as the Deputy Director for the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE). Sir Aziz Sheikh holds multiple qualifications including BSc, MBBS, MSc, MD, FRCGP, FRCP, FRCPE, FFPH, FACMI, FFCI, FRSE, and FMedSci. He has acted as an adviser to various Scottish, UK, and international government bodies, as well as inter-governmental organisations such as the World Bank and the World Health Organization. He is an editorial board member for several journals including Health Informatics Journal, Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, The Lancet Regional Health Europe, Medical Care, and PLoS Medicine, and is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for Quality in Health Care. In recognition of contributions to medicine and health care, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2014 and received a knighthood in 2022 for services to COVID-19 research and policy.
Sir Aziz Sheikh's research focuses on primary care and epidemiology, with significant interests in asthma and allergy. They leverage health information technology and data science to transform care delivery and improve population health. Sir Aziz Sheikh collaborates with academic colleagues globally and works closely with policymakers in the UK and internationally. They have held research grants exceeding $100 million and have published regularly in leading journals, accumulating over 50,000 citations and being recognised as a Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate, 2018). Current project activities include work on health inequalities and asthma.
