New AI Funding in the UK: What’s on Offer for Postgraduate Students

Good news for postgraduate students wishing to study AI in the UK – the government has announced a £118 million boost in funding for AI-based postgraduate courses and research.

Students will be able to access this funding through new studentships, scholarships and grants as early as 2024.

We’ve taken a look at what this announcement means if you’re thinking of studying an AI course or research programme, and what new funding you can access. The government has also announced wider initiatives that ensure industry participation (which you can also benefit from once you graduate).

New UKRI funding

There’s excellent news for PhD students interested in AI research in the UK. In a first, the UK Government has named 12 new UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) focussing on the development and application of AI. They have been awarded funding worth £117 million which will be made accessible to PhD students through studentships.

The CDTs are based at 16 universities including Imperial College London, University of Edinburgh and University of Oxford. You can find the complete list of new AI CDTs on the UKRI website.

Doctoral students will be able to specialise in mapping the future of AI and its impact in priority areas like healthcare, discovery of new treatments, and boosting productivity in the NHS.
