International Doctorate Centre for High Value, Low Environmental Impact Manufacturing

Manufacuring PhD TrainingThe International Doctorate Centre at WMG, University of Warwick, offers a challenging 4-year International Engineering Doctorate programme for talented researchers to further develop their technical and transferable skills within a research and training environment shaped by the needs of the manufacturing industry.

The EPSRC-backed Doctorate combines both academic and industrial expertise; offering industry relevant research projects supported by partner companies, taught courses including a possible MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and an international placement with our academic and industrial partners overseas.

Examples of current research challenges include:
  • Sustainable luxury – where does a luxury brand fit in a sustainable future?
  • Lightweight materials and processes for the automotive sector
  • Development of high value product lifecycle management and collaboration tools for use by SMEs
  • Reducing waste in the supply chain
  • Battery design and testing for hybrid vehicles
  • Systems diagnostics and health monitoring of complex electrical systems in vehicles
  • Human/machine interface concepts
  • Sustainable manufacturing business models
We are seeking applicants from a variety of backgrounds, including manufacturing, mechanical, electrical/electronic and materials/metallurgy engineering, and applied sciences such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics who have a minimum of a 2:1 in their first degree and can demonstrate an enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurship.

Rather than a traditional dissertation, we take a portfolio approach covering not only competencies in research but those key to developing leadership and personal qualities such as: expert knowledge of an engineering and technology area; appreciation of business culture; project and programme management; teamwork and leadership skills; technical organisation; finance, project planning and control.

The studentships on offer comprise a tax-free stipend of c£19,000 a year, tuition fees paid and a generous study package (research consumables and travel budget).
