Students in Australia are allowed to work 40 hours a fortnight (or 20 hours a week). Having a part-time job while you study is a good way to cover living costs and earn some extra money. Tutoring, working in a café or at a store are some jobs students often opt for. However, Australia offers some more unconventional part-time jobs that you might want to take advantage of.
Seasonal fruit farms are a common sight in Australia, and they’re often looking for people to work during harvesting season. If you like the outdoors, then this is a great option for a job outside term-time. However, harvesting jobs can be labour intensive and require you to travel outside the city centre. It will definitely get you away from the screens and books for a bit though!
Keeping with the outdoors theme, you can also work at a farm. You might be tasked with taking care of livestock or cleaning, but it will depend on what your employer wants help with. Some farms are quite far away from the city so this might not be a feasible working option during term-time. However, a lot of farms who hire help provide lodgings and food for the time you’re working for them. Unconventional as it might be, it’s a good way to visit unique places and take in a bit of the culture of Australia.
Australia relies hugely on tourism, so no matter where you’re studying, you can find a job in the hospitality industry. Students often work at hotels as receptionists, cleaning staff or bartenders and servers in the hotel restaurant. You can be flexible with your working hours and if you’re working close to campus, you can easily work during term-time as well. It is also a good way to give back to the local industry and you‘re sure to meet some interesting travellers along the way.
If you’re having to leave your furry friend behind then this might be the job for you. As a dog walker or pet sitter, you’ll be tasked with taking care of pets when their owners can’t. You could be taking them out for walks, feeding, grooming, playing and taking them to the vet in case of an emergency. However, you’ll have to work according to the owner’s schedule. It can be something you dip in and out of alongside a more conventional part-time job. And being around pets also has great benefits for your general wellbeing.
You can’t think of Australia and not think of lifeguards on Bondi Beach. However, you will need have certain qualifications to work as a lifeguard. Check with your local government about how you can get certified and if international certifications (if you already have any) are accepted. You might have to start with lifeguarding at swimming pools but with some experience you can move onto other kinds of lifeguard positions.
