Commonwealth PhD Scholarships offer talented Indian doctoral students the opportunity to complete a funded 12-month placement at a participating UK university. If successful, you’ll receive a tuition fee waiver, travel expenses and a living stipend.
In this guide I'll walk you through the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship programme for Indian students. You'll know how it work, what benefits it offers and how you can apply for funding. Let's dive in shall we?
The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship India scheme is part of the wider Commonwealth Scholarship programme, funded by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Indian students are eligible for the Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship, which supports PhD candidates from low- and middle-income countries to complete a one-year placement at a UK university. This placement can be split into two six-month periods.
Your research must fall under one of the six Commonwealth development themes:
For more details, visit the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website.
To qualify, you must be an Indian citizen (or a refugee from an eligible Commonwealth country), permanently resident in India, and registered at an Indian university for your PhD when the scholarship begins.
Academically, you should have either:
Your Indian university should have a connection with the UK university where you plan to do your placement.
The scholarship supports students who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK, so you may need to demonstrate your financial situation. You are also expected to return to India after completing your award.
These are the main financial benefits you’ll get from a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship:
There’s also a family allowance of £485 for your first child if you’re widowed, divorced or a single parent. You can get an additional £120 per month for your second and third children. They’ll need to be under 16 and living at the same address as you in the UK.
The first step is to apply for a PhD placement at a UK university that works with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). Once accepted or in progress, you apply directly to the CSC through their online portal.
Applications are assessed on three main criteria:
Applications usually open in December and close in February, with results announced around June.
I hope this guide has made the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship process feel more manageable. While it may seem complex at first, breaking it into stages such as choosing a project, securing admission, and submitting your application makes it easier to handle.
Remember, the scholarship is competitive but achievable. Strong academics are important, and so are a clear research proposal, solid references, and a demonstration of your research’s impact.
My top tip is to start early. Contact supervisors, refine your idea, and gather documents well before the deadline. This reduces stress and gives you time to strengthen your application.
Do not be discouraged if you do not succeed on your first try. Many candidates apply more than once, so treat it as a learning experience and keep going.
Good luck!
No. Current PhD students are not eligible for the Commonwealth Masters Scholarship.
In most cases, yes. You are usually expected to have applied for and ideally secured admission to a UK PhD programme at the time you submit your Commonwealth Scholarship application. This often means contacting potential supervisors well in advance.
The scholarship typically covers full tuition fees, a monthly living allowance, return airfare to the UK, and additional grants for research, travel, or thesis-related costs. This makes it one of the most comprehensive PhD funding options available.
The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is very competitive. Selection is based on academic merit, the quality of your research proposal, references, and the potential development impact of your research in India or other Commonwealth countries.
Yes. You can apply to multiple UK universities and PhD projects. However, you must ensure that the PhD you eventually accept aligns with the details in your Commonwealth Scholarship application.
