Our Scholarship Competition – What the Judges are Looking For

We’re pleased to announce that applications for our scholarship competition will be opening soon! If you sign up to our newsletter you’ll be the first to know when applications open, how to apply and when the winners are announced! But first, what is our scholarship competition?

Each year we award £6,000 each to two students starting a postgraduate degree, one at Masters level and the other PhD. We’re keen to support excellent students that not only have a financial need but will go on to use their degree to benefit their community.

Thinking of applying? You’ll need to write a 200 word personal statement explaining why you’re the best person for the award. Here’s the key things our judges are looking for.

Academic achievement

One of the first categories we look at is previous academic achievement. Don’t worry, we’re not here to judge your school exam results or make sure you’re already a prize winner. We want to know that you’re passionate about education and have the drive to complete your postgraduate degree. Education can do wonders to help communities so we’re looking for applications that can show us they’re up for the challenge! Which brings us onto the next point…

A contribution to university life

Universities are more than just a place to study and receive a degree. They’re thriving communities that encourage students to engage with and learn from each other. We’re looking for someone who sees the value in community and gives just as much as they take. Maybe you’ve set up your own club or run for a position in your student. If you’ve done any interesting and relevant activities during your previous degrees, we want to hear about them!

A contribution to wider society

Don’t worry if it’s been a while since you’ve been to university, we’re also keen on hearing about any local community efforts. Let us know about the causes you’re passionate about and what you’ve done to support them. Show us how getting a Masters degree or PhD might help you continue to improve the lives of others.

Financial need

The next thing applicants should demonstrate is a financial need for the scholarship. Postgraduate study isn’t cheap, so we want to make sure people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to receive lifechanging education.

The ‘X-factor’

Finally, our judges really value the ‘X-factor’. But what do we mean by that?

We mean personality! While our judges will be looking at all the things you’ve done over the years, they’re really interested in who you are as a person. Don’t be afraid to put your own unique stamp on your application!

Make sure to start jotting down some notes so you’re ready to apply when applications open for prosepective Masters and PhD students. Oh, and don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter so you’ll be the first to hear when that happens. We’ll also be announcing the winners in our newsletter. But until then, we wish you the best of luck!
