Attracting over 300,000 international students each year, Canada’s world-renowned universities are an excellent option for your postgraduate degree abroad. To lay things out clearly, we’ve looked at Canada’s highest-ranking universities in 2023 to see what made them so great for postgraduate study.
We’ve used data from Times Higher Education (THE) which breaks down each university’s rank through a scoring system. For Masters and PhD students, we’ve paid specific attention to the research score, citations (how often the institution’s research is cited by other universities) and international outlook. Each is marked out of 100.

Top of the list is the University of Toronto. Ranked 18th in the world by THE, this institution is a historically impressive place for research and education. They scored a 93.3 in research and 92.8 in citations. Even if you’re undergoing a taught Masters degree, studying at an institution which produces world renowned research can help support your dissertation and provide the best learning opportunities.
Aside from high research scores, the university also achieved an 89.7 in international outlook, likely due to the institute’s large global reach with alumni from over 190 countries and territories.
Next up is the University of British Columbia, placing 40th in the world. The institution scored 73.1 in research and 88.8 in citations, showing its deserved position among the top universities in the world. It also outscored the University of Toronto in international outlook, achieving a 94.8!
The University of British Columbia has a long-established tradition of interdisciplinary research. They also have two campus locations, including a modern sports centre. For the bookworms, you’ll be pleased to hear the university is home to Canada’s second largest research library housing over seven million publications.
Not far behind the University of British Columbia is McGill University. THE placed them 46th in the world. McGill is the oldest university in Montreal and one of three institutions in Quebec that primarily uses the English language rather than French. The institute has produced 12 Nobel Prize winners to date and lays claim to the invention of modern American football, hockey and basketball!
For research, the university scored 72.4, only marginally less than the University of British Columbia. It also achieved 82.5 in citations and 91 for international outlook.
In at fourth place is McMaster University, renowned for its medical school. Coming in 85th in the world, McMaster university outranks all the previous mentioned institutions in citations (94.6) and industry (89.9). These scores demonstrate the university to be an excellent place for postgrads to gain valuable industry experience.
McMaster University currently has over 3,000 postgraduate students so you know you’ll be joining a thriving community. It’s also the only Canadian host site of a United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health.
Last up on the list is the University of Montreal. THE currently ranks the institution at 111 in the world. While the research score (53.2) is lower than many of the other places on this list, the University of Montreal achieved an impressive 85.5 in international outlook and 76.5 in industry.
The university attracts over $500 million in research funding each year and is home to renowned laboratories such as MILA, IRIC and CRDP. You can be sure that the experience you’ll be gaining will prepare you for an innovative and industry-focused career.
Although this blog has highlighted the current best performers in Canada, there are many stand-out universities with lots to offer Masters and PhD students. Rankings provided by institutes like THE are a good method to assess the quality of different research centres, however there is a lot more that goes into deciding your place of study.
